Social Monitoring and Evaluation for Community Targets

Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority is working with the social research and social planning firm EBC to undertake a social monitoring project which will establish progress towards the delivery of social targets in the Southern Rivers Catchment Action Plan.

EBC Director Dr Mark Fenton is one of Australia's leading social scientists working in the NRM field. Dr Fenton is also working with the National Land and Water Resources Audit on a national level project to assess the social and institutional foundations of NRM (as part of the Australian Government's National NRM Monitoring and Evaluation Framework).

The five targets to be assessed include:

C1: Engagement
From 2006 the willingness of communities to engage in natural resource management and the quality of that engagement will be enhanced, with the number of people working collaboratively maintained or increased.
C2: Community Support
From 2006 the support system that resources local communities to contribute to natural resource management will be improved.
C3: Caring for Country
From 2006 indigenous communities will be better engaged in natural resource management planning and resources and opportunities to “Care for Country” are increased.
C4: Capacity and Practices
By 2016 there will be an increase in community awareness, knowledge and skills in relation to natural resource management and an increase in the adoption of practices that improve natural resource outcomes.
C5: CMA Capacity
This indicator refers to the capacity of SRCMA to deliver NRM outcomes.

SRCMA's social monitoring project is in the pre-implementation phase with more information to be posted here as the project proceeds.
