Eurobodalla Subregion covers an area of the NSW South Coast from South Durras in the North to Akolole in the South.
Much of the land (79) is forested (State Forest and National Park) with only 21% in private land and managed by Local Government. Much of the protected land has significant biodiversity values. The natural beauty, high diversity of flora and fauna and clean beaches of the Eurobodalla region and the relaxed coastal lifestyle bring a growing population into the Eurobodalla region. It also makes the location an ideal tourist destination to enjoy nature-based activities. Tourist pressures can triple the population around peak times.
The 2004 census lists 36,000 people living in the Eurobodalla. The main population centres being Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma. The region grows by approximately 5% per year and is therefore expected to double in population in the next 20 years. Close proximity of the Eurobodalla to Canberra and Southern Sydney make it an ideal location for retirement or a sea-change. The high population growth rates in the Eurobodalla places considerable pressure on natural resources, highlighting the need for appropriate management and investment. The Eurobodalla community has a high level of community participation and willingness to embrace innovation.
Important Aboriginal places such as Gulaga and those around the estuaries, coastal floodplains and headlands reflect a cultural attachment to the Eurobodalla’s natural resources extending over thousands of years.
Significant primary industries in the Eurobodalla are forestry, fishers, oyster growers, dairy & beef farmers. However the traditional industries of dairying, beef, timber and fishing have given way to the growth industries of tourism, building and service sectors. The Eurobodalla Shire State of the Environment Report indicates that commercial fishing (including Aquaculture) is nine times more important to the Eurobodalla economy than to the National economy. The estimated catch value from the commercial fishing industry each year is limited since the Commonwealth and State buy-out of the south east trawl and other commercial fisheries.
Eurobodalla Shire Council represents the sole Local Government Authority in this Southern Rivers NRM sub-region. Local Government is one of the largest collective land managers in the region and therefore a key partner with the SRCMA in ensuring positive NRM outcomes. The primary way that Councils manage the environment is through land use planning. Individual programs and projects ranging from stormwater management and environmental repair through to education support this. It is in these areas that the SRCMA is best placed to support council with their environmental responsibilities. Currently partnership arrangements include coastal, weed and water quality programs.
